The Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport is a corporate aviation center with over 40 based business jets, many affiliated with Fortune 500 companies in the Kansas City area. Located on the north side of the Missouri River across from the Kansas City CBD, the historic airport was once the commercial service airport for the community. Constraints on all sides limit the development potential of this important airport. The primary issue in the master plan was determining the most effective means for the airport to comply with FAA design standards, particularly the runway safety areas. The existing runways had very little safety area extending beyond each end. With corporate traffic operating daily to international destinations, it is critical to maintain as muchof the 7,000 foot runway as possible. Coffman Associates, coordinating with the FAA, the Kansas City Aviation Department, the FBO, and corporate pilots has drafted a solution that will meet the needs of aviation and business community that rely on this airport.
