Modesto City-County Airport serves as the commercial service airport
for Modesto and Stanislaus County. Situated along the Tuolumne River,
the airport is easily accessible from Highway 99, a primary route
through the San Joaquin Valley. Modesto (Spanish for modesty) was
founded in 1870, when the Central Pacific Railroad established the
location as the terminus of the line, prior to pushing south to Merced.
With a recent influx of corporate aircraft into the airport from the
coastal areas, the master plan examined the potential for additional
runway length, navigational facilities, and areas for expansion of
hangar facilities to meet the recent growth. Much of this demand has
been created since the events of September 11, 2001, and has created
the need to expand hangar facilities which can support multiple
long-range corporate jets. Expansion of passenger terminal facilities,
air cargo, and general aviation facilities was also reflected in the
plan. An environmental Initial Study was included in the scope of
services to provide the basis for the City’s determination of whether
the master plan study requires a Negative Declaration, a Mitigated
Negative Declaration, or an Environmental Impact Report (EIR).
