San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is located in
the west-central portion of San Luis Obispo County, south of the City of
San Luis Obispo. Located on only 340 acres, the airport supports
three airlines (handling over 300,000 annual passengers), an aircraft
maintenance facility for American Eagle, and over 300 based general
aviation aircraft, including ten jets. With the recent introduction
of RJ service, it was necessary to evaluate alternatives for extending the
primary runway (which provides only 5,300 feet) and upgrading runway safety
areas. The County is already underway with early architectural
reviews for a new airline terminal, in a new location, which is anticipated
by 2010. The new terminal location is requiring the relocation of
several fixed base operations and aircraft storage hangars. The
planning effort has also included an economic benefit study, local land use
planning, and a benefit cost analysis (for the runway extension project).
The master plan updates a previous plan completed by Coffman
Associates in 1998.
