Coffman Associates had completed the previous master
plan for Sioux Falls Regional Airport in 1995. By 2001, the airport
had experienced strong passenger and operational growth which required the
firm to examine the need for an extension to the secondary air carrier
runway. Based upon this analysis, a 1,330-foot extension was
recommended. The capital improvement program and airport layout plan
drawings were updated, and an Environmental Assessment was completed, for
which the FAA subsequently issued a Finding of No Significant Impact
(FONSI). The runway extension project (completed in 2002) was jointly
funded by the FAA, the South Dakota Air National Guard, the Sioux Falls
Regional Airport Authority, and the South Dakota Department of
Transportation, with construction to be completed in the summer of 2002.
The total 20-year program includes over $61 million in airport improvement
projects.
