Coffman Associates had completed the previous master plan for Sioux
Falls Regional Airport in 1995. By 2001, the airport had
experienced strong passenger and operational growth which required the
firm to examine the need for an extension to the secondary air carrier
runway. Based upon this analysis, a 1,330-foot extension was
recommended. An Environmental Assessment was completed, for which the
FAA subsequently issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). The
runway extension project (completed in 2002) was jointly funded by the
FAA, the South Dakota Air National Guard, the Sioux Falls Regional
Airport Authority, and the South Dakota Department of Transportation. A
master plan update was completed in 2006, with emphasis on terminal
renovation, air cargo expansion, and a new SRE/maintenance complex.
