Pangborn Memorial Airport serves as the primary commercial
service airport for Douglas and Chelan Counties, and is located geographically
in the north-central portion of Washington State. Named for Clyde Pangborn,
the famous aviator who completed the first transpacific flight with copilot
Hugh Herndon in 1931, the facility serves Horizon Air (the scheduled passenger
carrier), several air cargo companies, fixed base operators, and charter
companies. The airport is owned by the Port Districts of Chelan and Douglas
Counties, and operated by the Pangborn Memorial Airport Board. In examining
the future capabilities of the airport, special attention was given to
air service reliability, and the ability to achieve an improvement in instrument
approach procedures. The analysis resulted in the recommendation to establish
a new ILS approach to the airfield, and to shift the runway by 800 feet
to accommodate the new approach procedure. In addition, the plan calls
for additional land acquisition, access to newly created hangar development
areas, and expansion of an on-airport business park.
